VHF Course

Saturday October 7, 2017: Learn all about the uses of marine radios, choice of frequencies, operation, phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases, as well as Digital Selective Calling and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, (DSC/GMDSS) all in a one day course.

A written test and oral exam will be given at the end of the day. Successful candidates will be given a temporary certificate upon completion of the course. The license will follow in the mail 4-6 weeks after the course. Materials included.

Taught in a classroom setting, the student will learn the navigational theory required to safely navigate a vessel in coastal or inland waters. 

A recognized navigation standard is now a recommended prerequisite to the Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising and Power Standards. 

The Coastal Navigation Standard is applied practically and tested in both the Intermediate and the Advanced Cruising Standard.

The format of the course up to Section 5  includes about an hour lecture followed by "Homework" which is done in class.  From Section 5 on, the lecture is shorter but the homework takes a little longer as plotting courses and bearings on "chartlets" take a little more time.  There are extra exercises available that the student can take home as homework or those who wish to, may stay behind and work them through with the instructor.

Refunds and Course Cancellations

Refunds for courses for which an individual has registered shall be provided under the following circumstances:
Course Cancellation: A full refund will be issued to a registrant in a course where due to low enrollment, the entire course is cancelled. Prior to the issuing of a refund, the registrant will be offered the opportunity to register in a like or similar course, should space be available.

Other: In other circumstances, the following criteria will apply:

  • In the event that cancellation is received 7 days prior to the start of any course, a refund will be issued less an administration fee of $ 100.
  • In the event that cancellation is received no later than the first day of the course, a refund will be issued less an administration fee of 50% of the course fee.
  • In the event that a participant transfers to another available course prior to the start of the course, only the fee difference between the courses shall be charged.
  • In the event of injury, a pro-rated refund amount will be established and the participant will be offered the choice between having the pro-rated refund applied towards re-registering for the course at a future time, or applied toward another course at RHYC in the future.
  • Should space be available in a program, students may be added to a course at a pro-rated fee based on the number of days participating. An administration fee may apply.
  • Participants asked to leave courses due to safety or disciplinary concerns shall not receive a refund of any funds paid to participate in the course.

Other than the above, refunds will not be issued to participants after they have begun a course, where the course has not been cancelled for some reason by RHYC.
