Why Support RHYC?
RHYC is nationally recognized for its superb sailing conditions, top calibre boating education and character-developing programs for youth, adults and those with a disability. RHYC embraces inclusively, participation, hands-on learning, family values, respect for the environment, and community engagement. RHYC is a waterfront centre of excellence in the Hamilton/Halton region.
Our Rich History
For over 150 years, sailing and boating have been important activities on Hamilton Harbour. The Hamilton Yacht Club was founded in1888 – and in 1891, Queen Victoria consented to the use of the word “Royal”, making The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club (RHYC) one of only 12 clubs in Canada granted this special designation.
 |
|
Since 1888, RHYC has offered some of the top sailing programs in Canada. Canada’s first Olympic sailor, John Robertson Sr., was a member of RHYC. Past Commodore, Don Green, won the Canada’s Cup in 1978 with his yacht Evergreen, and later spearheaded an America’s Cup campaign. Over the years, RHYC members have been involved in all levels of racing and competitive sailing, winning many titles and accolades. RHYC has also attracted racers from all across North America and beyond to our regattas, and hosted World, North American, Canadian and Provincial championships.

Our Facility
Located at the foot of MacNab Street North, RHYC has an ideal sailing location on the Southwestern shore of Hamilton Harbour, at the western tip of Lake Ontario. The unique geography of the harbour provides shelter for beginners and interesting winds for the more seasoned sailor, and also allows for an extended sailing season from early spring to late fall. Recent remedial environmental activities in and around the Harbour have ensured a revitalized bay and excellent water quality.
Our club provides a year-round waterfront facility--private meeting rooms are available, and catering packages can be provided as required. We are close to downtown Hamilton, have easy access to major highways, the Hamilton Waterfront Trail and the Bayfront and Pier 4 Parks. RHYC is Hamilton’s only yacht club providing youth, adult and able sail sailing lessons.
Our Demographic
The 300 members of RHYC and their families encompass an enthusiastic group of people who enjoy the outdoors and water activities ranging from sailing, motor boating, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding. RHYC has a history of strong volunteerism and community involvement, sharing the joys of sailing and water sports while supporting youth participation and development.

Our Community
Since 1888, the RHYC has been running excellent regattas and training sailors. Learning to sail is a gift kids have for life! The benefits include increasing skills in; self confidence, spatial awareness (avoiding collisions etc.), water safety, coordination, sense of direction, weather knowledge and tidiness! The RHYC Sail Training program also supports the local Sea Scouts and the McMaster Sailing Team with equipment and instruction, and has scholarships annually for youth in the City Kidz program.
You can play an important role in nurturing a new generation of local, international and Olympic sailors by sponsoring our regattas. This ensures that racers, young and old, have an opportunity to try out their sailing skills in a safe and controlled way on Hamilton Harbour. Regattas allow sailors at all levels and abilities to participate, while providing structured opportunities for talented individuals to transition into higher levels of racing.
Regatta costs include: motor boats to run the race (plus fuel/upkeep/repair), judging expenses, awards/plaques, coaching staff, and volunteer and youth participant lunches among other things.
