Introduction to Keelboat Sailing

This is one of the entry-level Standards in the series of Sail Canada Standards on sailing keelboats and cruising. It is intended to provide novice boaters with the opportunity to experience the joys of boating. The session may also be used to build crew teamwork skills on the water. We offer this standard on our Club Sharks, 24ft.

This standard introduces novice boaters to safe practices in preparing to leave the dock while underway and when returning to the dock.

Training will include, but not be limited to:

Basic boat checks for seaworthiness.

Review safety equipment location and use.

Discuss basic safety when participating as a crew.

Participate in the preparation of the boat for departure.

Participate in departure from the dock as a crew.

Demonstrate safe behaviour while underway.

Participate in returning to the dock as crew.

Assist in activities required to secure and put away the vessel.

There are no defined evaluation components for this Standard. Sessions will typically end with participants conversing about what was learned and the next steps.

This Standard provides a great opportunity for first-time boaters to get out on the water with a knowledgeable individual. With minimal learning objectives, this course can be easily adapted to meet the comfort level of first-time boaters or more experienced individuals.

Participants will have the opportunity to experience sun, wind, spray, rain, and temperatures consistent with the time of year they take part in this activity. When underway, the vessel may exhibit irregular motion due to wind and waves. Participants may be asked to perform simple tasks at the dock and move around the vessel when underway. If you walk down the dock with a smile, this session is for you!

The program is offered on Monday Evenings, from 5 pm - 8 pm.

Price $75.00 (plus tax). Members receive a 15% discount.
